New-look Canton H.S. athletics dept. welcomes new director

The ongoing transformation of the Canton High School Athletics Department continued Tuesday evening when the Plymouth-Canton Board of Education approved the hiring of Tiffany Roberts as the school’s assistant principal of activities and athletics.

Roberts succeeds Kristen Farkas, who resigned in June to accept a similar position with the Trenton Public Schools.

In addition to a new athletic director — the third in less than two years at Canton — the school is transitioning this fall to its new Cobras mascot/logo, which replaces the 50-year-old “Chiefs”; the construction of a new athletic stadium located northeast of the the high school; the hiring of a new head football coach (Eric Newman); and the construction of an addition to its main Phase III gymnasium.

Roberts brings a wealth of athletics leadership experience to her new position.

Former Flint-area administrator

Her most-recent position was the district athletic director/assistant principal at Flint Carman-Ainsworth High School and middle school, where she oversaw 46 teams and 71 coaches, according to her resume, after being hired in July of 2022.

Among Roberts’ most impressive accomplishments at Carman-Ainsworth was the implementation of Athletes for a Better World, an initiative that encourages student-athletes to become active in our community through volunteering at local elementary schools to read and work with the students in the classrooms.

“I work closely with our athletic boosters to help get volunteers and plan various fundraising events to get our parents and community involved,” Roberts stated on her resume.

This will be a critical part of Roberts’ new job considering Canton High School athletic boosters will be instrumental in replacing uniforms and equipment in the wake of the board of education’s decision to retire the longtime Chiefs mascot with jerseys and equipment adorned with Cobra names and images.

Impressive credentials

As of Aug. 14, an official Cobra logo had not yet been approved by school district leadership.

Roberts earned a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Physical and Health Education (and a minor in History) in December of 2006 from Saginaw Valley State University and a Masters in Administration/Principalship from SVSU in May 2013.

She has multiple athletics administration certifications as well.

Roberts’ hiring coincides with the start of Michigan High School Athletic Association fall sports practices/tryouts.
