GROCERIES GALORE! Patel Bros. market coming to Canton Center Rd.
Canton’s North Canton Center Road is quickly evolving into a grocery gold mine for western Wayne County shoppers.
Months after the opening of Papaya Fruit Market at 6463 N. Canton Center, a Patel Brothers grocery store has secured township approval to build a 20,000-square-foot facility at 6130 N. Canton Center, just a short walk north from New Bombay Grocers.
Once the Patel Brothers location is up and running sometime in the next several months, it will be the Chicago-based company’s 57th store since it was founded in 1974.
The sprawling new grocery store will replace what was most recently the home of Canton Computers, which closed its Canton location in 2022. Canton Computers still operates a Livonia store at 34900 Plymouth Road.
Unanimous approval
Widely-respected throughout the United States for its diverse collection of Indian foods, Patel Brothers’ bid to secure a Canton site cruised through the Canton Township Planning Commission site plan approval phase, earning 9-0 vote of approval that moved the process to the Board of Trustees, who also voted unanimously to approve the plan, with zoning ordinance landscape plan compliance attached to the approval.
“At Patel Brothers, we’re committed to sharing what we know best about our Indian heritage and culture: our food,” its website explains.
“We hope to continue to educate and expose new generations to the regional diversity of India and the richness of our culture and our food. Patel Brothers is devoted to continuing its family tradition of personal service and exceptional quality.
The company’s 53-year history is compelling.
Hard work pays off
After working in factory assembly lines for several years, a pair of brothers and their families pooled their modest savings and purchased a small grocery store located at 2034 W. Devon Ave. in Chicago.
