Canton woman launches local empowering ‘Moms In Business’ group
As a wife, mother of two sons, Realtor and brand partner for Savvi (a women’s apparel company), Andrea Miller’s limited free time is precious.
But that hasn’t stopped the ambitious Canton resident from launching a Plymouth/Canton chapter of “Moms In Business” — an international organization that provides networking, education and empowerment opportunities for women in business.
“I’ve been obsessed for a long time in women empowering women,” said Miller. “I heard about Moms In Business last year and attended a meeting in Troy in December. Its goals matched my ambition of bringing businesswomen together to share ideas and empower one another.”
Miller approached the leader of the December meeting and expressed an interest in getting more involved.
Strong foundation
“Another lady suggested that I start a Moms In Business chapter for Canton, Plymouth and surrounding areas, and I’ve been onboard ever since.
“The great thing about the organization is that it is already established with close to 70,000 members worldwide. By starting a local chapter, it’s not like I’ll be starting from scratch as there are so many resources already available.”
MIB was launched by Leona Burton in the United Kingdom in July 2020, amid the uncertainty of a global pandemic, on a modest startup budget and with the help of a few friends, the MIB International website explains.
“With the aim of bringing together [moms] and women in business, providing them with great training and support, and access to business and life development opportunities, its rapid growth suggests the business may have discovered a real need,” the site added.
The organization is built around four key themes: support, empowerment, education and networking.
“The more-established MIB groups organize events where speakers come in and they charge for tickets,” Miller said. “I’m not quite there yet (she smiled), but that’s where I’d like to see our chapter get.
Gradual growth is the goal
“We’re starting out with once-a-month get-togethers for coffee, where women can network and share ideas, but I’d eventually like to see, in addition to the monthly get-togethers, events every other month or so where we bring in speakers and have formal events. This is all about women empowering women, supporting each other.”
Miller said she’s looking forward to being in a position — as an MIB group leader — to help more business-minded women in the Plymouth-Canton area (and surrounding communities) connect and flourish.

“The monthly get-togethers will be very informal and will be held at local coffee shops,” Miller said. “Women can bring their children if they’d like. And it’s not just for Plymouth and Canton residents. Our meetings will be held in Plymouth and Canton, but if you live in, let’s say Livonia, and you don’t mind driving 15 minutes, you’re more than welcome.”
