Plymouth grad Crump’s last-second hoops heroics featured on ESPN
Somehow, Plymouth High School graduate and current Western Michigan University basketball player Anthony Crump’s incredible last-second, game-winning basket did not crack ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays of the Day list for Saturday, but it was featured prominently on ESPN.com.
With 1.6 seconds remaining and the Broncos tied 76-all with host Ball State, Western’s JaVaughn Hannah launched a football-like pass that bounced once near WMU’s free-throw line before Crump secured it near the rim and guided the ball into the basket to give his team a dramatic 78-76 victory as the buzzer sounded.
Among the teammates who celebrated with Crump near mid-court was former Canton High School star B. Artis White.
Productive reserve
Crump finished the game with 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks off the bench.
Crump graduated in 2018 from Plymouth, where he averaged 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists and 1.5 steals per game as a senior. He earned First Team All-KLAA and Second Team All-State honors following his senior year.
Crump’s collegiate career has included two seasons at Middle Tennessee and three productive seasons at Northern Illinois University before signing with WMU prior to the 2023-24 season as a graduate student.
The son of Jessica and Vernon Crump, he has appeared in 29 games for the Broncos, averaging 6.1 points and 5.6 rebounds. Vernon Crump, who is a Plymouth-Canton Community Schools administrator and former Canton High School athletic director, played college basketball at North Dakota State and overseas professionally, according to the WMU athletics website.
