It’s a bird, it’ a plane, it’s … Canton senior Quincy Isaac soaring to a Michigan indoor long jump record.

On Saturday at Central Michigan University’s Jack Skoog Indoor Athletic Complex, Isaac broke the Michigan high school indoor record with a leap of 25 feet, 1.75 inches at the Michigan Indoor Track Series State Championship.

The effort was the best in the United States during the recently-completed indoor season.

Isaac out-jumped runner-up Jordan Paige by close to three feet in an event that usually separates competitors by mere inches.

Isaac earned MHSAA state titles in the long jump in 2023 (24 feet, 3.75 inches) and 2024 (23 feet, 3.75 inches) — and is the early favorite to three-peat in the event at June’s MHSAA state championship.

Visualization important

“I close my eyes and try to visualize what I want my jump to look like,” Isaac told SocialHouseNews.com prior to the 2024 state meet.

“There are so many little things involved. Pushing off on the right spot is important because it can cost you distance if you’re too far behind it. Landing is important, too, because the official distance is based on the body part that lands closest to the take-off line.”

Isaac qualified for the D1 state meet as a freshman in the long jump.

“I finished second to last,” he said, smiling. “I think that motivated me to work harder.”
