Canton High School swimmers earn All-American, All-State accolades
Seven members of the 2023 Canton High School girls swim-and-dive team recently earned academic All-American and All-State honors from the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association and the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association.
To qualify for the NISCA honors, student-athletes must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.750 on a 4-point scale, be a graduating senior and have lettered in their high school program (swimming, diving, or water polo) during their senior year.
Canton’s NISCA All-Americans are: Charvi Rayarapu, Emily Lin, Emily Zhang, Maria Balow, Ann FitzGerald and Emily Kuruvilla.
Balow, a senior captain, competed four years for the Chiefs, lettering each of her four years. Her specialties were the 50, 200 and 500 free, and 100 backstroke.
Kuruvilla competed three years for Canton, lettering her senior year. She specialized in the 100 free, 500 free and 200 individual medley.
Excellent achievement
Lin was a three-year member of the team, lettering each of her three years while competing in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and 100 breaststroke.
Rayarapu swam three years for Canton, lettering her senior year. She specialized in the 50 free, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 200 IM.
Zhang, a three-year letter-winner, competed in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and 100 breaststroke.
FitzGerald was a four-year letter-winner, excelling in the 200 and 500 freestyle, and 200 IM.
Dedication paid off
To qualify for the MISCA honor, student-athletes were required to earn a minimum GPA of 3.650 on a 4-point scale, be a graduating senior and have lettered in their high school program (swimming, diving) their senior year.
In addition to the above-listed student-athletes, Elle Barker earned the MISCA award. The senior captain was a four-year letter-winner, competing in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle events.
