Madi Morson is pictured with Salem Head Coach Rod Wells 24 hours before she led Central Michigan’s women’s basketball team to a thrilling one-point win over Miami.

On Tuesday, Madi Morson made the 280-mile round-trip drive from Mount Pleasant (where she is a freshman student-athlete) to Canton so she could watch the Rocks’ girls basketball team’s 43-31 victory over Canton.

Just over 24 hours later, Morson wore a Superwoman cape in the final minute of the Central Michigan University women’s basketball game against visiting Miami University in Ohio.

With the Chippewas trailing 44-43 with 26 seconds remaining, Morson hit a driving layup in traffic to lift her team to a one-point lead.

After Miami regained the lead seconds later, Morson drained a pull-up jump shot with 8 seconds remaining to give her team the lead for good, 47-46.

MM, MM great!

“[Madi]’s a heck of a player,” CMU Head Coach Kristin Haynie told cmuchippewas.com. “We practice special situations, different people taking the shots, so she was ready for the moment.

“For her to step up as a freshman, she’s going to be taking a lot of those last-second shots.”

Morson, a Miss Basketball finalist for Salem in 2024, scored 10 of her team-high 11 points in the second half. She also grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists and registered two steals.

Always adjusting

Asked Tuesday how she’s transitioning from high school basketball to college hoops, Morson was her modest self.

“It’s not way harder than I thought it was going to be, but it’s definitely harder than high school basketball because you’re playing against players who were the best players on their high school team,” Morson said. “I’m in the weight room more because the game at this level is so physical. I’m starting to adjust (to the physical play) better.”

Morson is already building a solid resume at CMU. On Dec. 15, she scored 32 points in 29 minutes in the Chippewas’ 72-68 loss at Dayton.
