Westland woman’s response to winning $1 million: ‘I still don’t believe it!
What started as a typical workday for a Westland woman quickly became a life-changing one when she received a call from her husband informing her she’d won a $1 million Powerball prize from the Michigan Lottery!
Catherine Martin, 63, matched the five white balls in the Sept. 4 drawing to win the big prize: 07-10-21-33-59. She bought her winning ticket at MD Westland LLC, located at 32919 Cherry Hill Road in Westland.
“I play Powerball every week and use a special set of numbers,” said Martin. “The day after the drawing, I got a call from my husband while I was at work telling me that he checked my Powerball ticket, and I’d won $1 million! I was stunned and had a hard time believing him. Honestly, I still don’t believe it!
Surprised family on Christmas
“We have kept our win a secret until we finally surprised our family on Christmas with the big news!”
“Lottery games, like Powerball, give players a chance to win prizes that will have a profound impact on their lives,” said Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli. “It is incredibly rewarding to hear how this prize will not only have a positive impact on the winner, but on her grandchildren as well, as she plans to put a portion of her winnings towards their college educations. Congratulations Catherine!”
Martin visited Lottery headquarters recently to claim her prize. With her winnings, she plans to invest and save for retirement and her grandkids’ college funds.
