RIVETING RALLY: Canton overcomes early deficit to net 1st win

The Canton boys lacrosse team’s chances of winning against Belleville were diving like the Stock Market early in Wednesday night’s bone-chilling game on the P-CEP’s east turf field.

The visiting Tigers were red-hot in the blustery conditions — the weather was brutally cold throughout the contest with a chilling rain falling throughout much of the second half — bursting to a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes.

Undeterred, the Cobras mounted a masterful comeback, ultimately winning 14-11 thanks to a balanced scoring attack, sticky defense and stellar goal-keeping by freshman Jakob Patterson.

Kyle Frew got the comeback party started with 2 minutes and 32 seconds remaining in the opening period to cut the hosts’ deficit to 3-1. Ninety-nine seconds later, Jack Lockhart lasered his first of four goals into the back of the net, and the game’s momentum was suddenly wearing red and white.

Rally time again

Belleville managed to regain a three-goal lead (6-3) 6:44 before halftime, but the Lockhart-led Cobras netted six of the next seven goals and never trailed again.

Joining Lockhart in the Four Goal Club for Canton was sophomore Aiden Carroll. Chase Hodges added three net-finders while Brady Weller chipped in with two.

Defensively, the Cobras were powered by Benjamin Grenillo and William Ott, among others.

Team effort

The winners were bolstered by strong mid-field play from Nick Parrish and Paolo Decina.

The victory vaulted Canton to first place in the KLAA East Division with a 1-0 mark, and 1-1 overall.

The Cobras return to action Thursday when they host Orchard Lake St. Mary’s at 7 p.m.
