Canton’s Waltonwood Senior Living celebrates life of Dolly Parton
Waltonwood resident Linda Cooper pays tribute to Dolly Parton, who passed away earlier this week.
In the wake of Dolly Parton’s recent passing, communities across the nation are reflecting on her extraordinary life, generosity, and musical heritage.
For the residents at Waltonwood Senior Living across Michigan, Dolly was far more than a legendary entertainer — she was a lifelong soundtrack of joy, strength, and personal connection.
For years, Waltonwood residents have celebrated her vibrant spirit through the annual “Waltonwood to Dollywood” traditions.
The seniors have filled community halls line-dancing to her classics, holding tribute sing-alongs, and sharing personal stories of how her resilience inspired their own lives.
Honoring Dolly’s legacy
In past celebrations, residents also honored her legacy of giving by hosting community children’s book drives inspired by her work in childhood literacy.
Today, the Waltonwood residents continue to sing, dance, and live alongside her music and enduring spirit. Her songs remain a daily staple in our communities, proving that her humor, warmth, and artistic legacy will keep our seniors moving, singing, and connected for years to come.

“Dolly always spoke about kindness through her songs and her life’s work, and I carried it forward with all the philanthropy that my late husband, Paul, and I did,” says Linda.
Dolly inspired charitable giving
Linda and Paul were dedicated supporters of Forgotten Harvest, where they worked with local shelters to host community dinners for those in need.
Inspired by Dolly’s example, they organized transportation to ensure that underhoused residents — including families and children — could attend.
For Linda, these moments were about connection: “Everyone has a story, and it shows that Dolly wants every story to be shared. My husband and I were so influenced by Dolly and her kindness; she filters into your being when you listen to her music and learn how she wants to share stories.”
Following the news of Dolly’s passing, Linda is eager to continue her philanthropic mission in a way that unites our community. Across Waltonwood, there is a Kindness Council — the heart of our community’s service initiatives — who continues to champion Dolly’s legacy through the Imagination Library and local library book donations.
Linda is eager to work closely with our Kindness Council and Lifestyle Enrichment team to foster intergenerational philanthropy among our residents, and we are currently coordinating an upcoming morning meeting to map out our goals and bring this vision to life.
