 Ribbon cutting set for $1.3 million renovation of Walnut Grove Campground

The Huron-Clinton Metroparks will host a ribbon cutting celebration at 11 a.m. on April 9 for the newly renovated Walnut Grove Campground at Lower Huron Metropark (in Belleville) — one of only two public campgrounds in Wayne County and the only one located in a natural setting.

The campground also serves travelers along the National Huron River Water Trail and the statewide Iron Belle Trail, both of which have direct access to the site.

The redevelopment improves accessibility and expands inclusive outdoor recreation opportunities for all visitors.

The $1.3 million project was supported by $300,000 of grant funding through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation Fund, with matching funds provided by the Huron-Clinton Metroparks.

Upgrades include:

* 15 new ADA-accessible campsites, including:
* 3 concrete pad RV sites with accessible grills, picnic tables, and firepits
* 10 gravel RV sites with accessible grills and picnic tables
* 2 tent-only sites with gravel bases and accessible picnic tables
* Water and electric hookups at every site
* New landscaping featuring 50 native trees
* Drinking fountain and water bottle filling stations
* Firewood storage shed
* Additional site enhancements

Guests will have the opportunity to tour the campground prior to its seasonal opening. Complimentary s’mores will be available during the event.
