Red Wings honor two Downriver educators in ‘Best of Class’ competition
Two Lincoln Park Public Schools teachers were recently recognized for their teaching excellence as part of the Detroit Red Wings Best in Class competition.
Mykela Hill and Katherine Tierney were honored by the Red Wings for their work positively impacting the lives of students inside and beyond the classroom.
Hill was the only special education teacher recognized in the competition. She teaches at Beacon School, which provides educational services for students with severe emotional impairments from districts throughout the Downriver area.
Hill and Tierney were recognized Oct. 10 for excellence in teaching by the Red Wings at the team’s home opener. The winners were treated to dinner, a trophy, tickets to the game and many other surprises.
Always looking for innovation in education
“I am honored to receive this award, which also recognizes our continued commitment at Beacon School to student success, serving the whole student and meeting their unique social, emotional and educational needs,” Hill said.
“I look forward to identifying more innovative ways to help my students succeed inside and outside the classroom.”
Tierney is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) teacher at Carr Elementary School.
‘Truly a thrill’
“It was truly a thrill to receive this award on such a massive stage,” Tierney said. “This award also recognizes our commitment at Carr and Hoover elementary schools to introducing our youngest learners to STEM principles that help them achieve and succeed for a lifetime.”
Hill and Tierney were among 25 teachers statewide who were honored in the first round of the competition. In April, one teacher will be selected as our Best in Class grand prize winner, receiving a $5,000 grant and a postgame meet and greet with a Detroit Red Wings player.
Though they did not advance to the final round, they each won a $500 gift card from Meijer to purchase school supplies.
“On behalf of our entire Railsplitter community, I want to congratulate Mykela and Katherine for their recognition and express my gratitude for their dedication to our students,” LPPS Superintendent Terry Dangerfield said.
“Both of these outstanding teachers represent our dedication to helping ensure our Railsplitters can learn and thrive in a welcoming, safe and nurturing environment.”
