TheLincoln Park High School DECA Team brought home 95 medals at the recent Michigan DECA District 8 Competition at Wayne County Community College.
The award-winning LPHS DECA program is part of the district’s continued commitment to preparing all Railsplitters for success and in-demand careers.
The team of 67 Railsplitters organized and hosted the December competition, where students put their marketing, finance, hospitality, management and other real-world business skills to the test against competing schools.
‘Truly heartwarming’
The conference also provided an opportunity for Railsplitters to meet, network and share ideas with DECA team members from across the region.
“Watching these Railsplitters light up was truly heartwarming,” said Leslie Barragan, the school’s DECA team advisor. “Some of these students aren’t involved in other activities where they receive public recognition, so being called to the stage — and then realizing they won — meant everything.
“They were absolutely over the moon.”
State conference next
Through a scoring system that weighs performance in competitive events and completion of a standardized test, 47 Railsplitters advanced to the State Career Development Conference in Detroit in March.
The LPHS DECA students operate the student store called The Crossing, where they sell Railsplitter merchandise.
“I would like to congratulate our outstanding DECA team for an amazing showing at the district competition and thank Mrs. Barragan and all our parents and staff who helped make this event such a success,” said Terry Dangerfield, Lincoln Park Public Schools superintendent.
“At Lincoln Park Public Schools, our award-winning DECA program is part of our continued commitment to preparing all Railsplitters for success and the in-demand careers of today and tomorrow.”
