Northville, Canton place 1-2 in Wayne Co. Swim & Dive Championships

Northville, Canton place 1-2 in Wayne Co. Swim & Dive Championships

Northville junior Finley Cadwell won the 100-yard butterfly event at the Wayne County Swim & Dive Championships this past weekend in Trenton.

Kensington Lakes Activities Association West Division rivals Northville and Canton finished 1-2 in last week’s Wayne County Swim & Dive Championships held at Trenton High School’s brand new natatorium.

The Mustangs won the 18-team event with 654 points to out-distance the runner-up Cobras, who compiled 335 point. Salem was fourth with 166 points, while the host Trojans placed sixth (106 points).

All competitors were required to meet qualification times in their respective events.

“Our girls swam very well,” said Canton Head Coach Ed Weber. “The Trenton pool was a great facility to hold this exciting meet. We had many season best times, including 11 D1 state cuts, and one school record (Hannah Gurgel in the 200 IM).”

Canton set five pool records at the Trenton facility.

The Mustangs’ 200 free relay team of Rachel King, Mia Bayer, Lucy Deller and Kathryn Lauster posted a first-place time of 1:39.94.

Gurgel (200 IM and 100 backstroke) and Tayla Smith (100 freestyle) were Canton’s two individual champions.

The Cobras also touched first in the 200 medley relay (Gurgel, Smith, Ximena Murillo and Mina Kennedy) and the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay (Amelia Pan, Gurgel, Abigail McAskin and Kennedy).
