Local coaching legend receives prestigious John Wooden ‘Legacy’ award

Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Executive Director Dan Young presents the John Wooden Legacy Award to Bob Blohm.

Hall of Fame basketball coach Bob Blohm’s treasure trove of honors grew by one Tuesday night prior to the Canton boys basketball team’s season opener against Detroit Catholic Central.

Blohm, who was inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan’s Hall of Fame in 2006, was presented with the National High School Basketball Coaches Association’s John Wooden Legacy Award by BCAM Executive Director Dan Young.

Throughout his 21 years of coaching the Canton and Salem girls basketball teams, Blohm’s squads earned 15 division and league championships.

“His teams played with great intensity on defense and an unselfish attitude on offense,” BCAM noted. “The motion offense he taught was difficult to defend and helped his teams win 15 district championships.”

A lot of trophies

Blohm’s teams captured regional titles five times and reached the MHSAA’s Final Four in 1989 and 1992.

“Bob’s dedication to the game has affected many lives,” BCAM’s proclamation continued. “He has mentored numerous coaches and has spent countless hours on and off the court helping others.

“Bob was instrumental in growing the girls game in Michigan in the late-1970s and early-1980s. He was a leader in providing additional opportunities for girls with off-season camps and clinics.”

Blohm is currently an assistant coach for Canton’s boys basketball program.

Congratulations, Bob!
