Here’s how you can help save historic Northville log cabin

Northville preservationists are in an urgent battle to save an 88-year-old log cabin built in 1936 for retired kindergarten teacher Mary Gilbert near the banks of the Middle Rouge River.

Located at 318 River St., the structure was the home of Gilbert, who was widely admired for her resilience in the face of deafness and her compassion for less-fortunate individuals during the Great Depression, the Northville River Restoration Task Force shared.

In recent years, the structure has been used as a temporary residence by employees of Northville Downs.

The Northville community is seeking support to move and preserve the historic log cabin on the Downs property that will be transformed into a new neighborhood with housing, retail and restaurants as part of the Northville Downs redevelopment, the City News of Northville reported.Selling a home in Southeast Michigan? Demolition without needed funds

The developer is paying up to $125,000 toward the cost to move and transport the log cabin, with matching funds being raised by the community at large.

Northville River Restoration Task Force is organizing this fundraiser to benefit Northville Historical Society Incorporated.

“We urgently need your help to save a part of our town’s history,” preservationists assert. “(The) historic log cabin representing the inspiring story of Mary Gilbert is set to be demolished in April unless we take action.”

To date, the fundraiser’s leaders have received $46,000 in checks and pledges. You can donate to the fundraiser by clicking here.

With your support, the Northville River Restoration Task Force will save and transform Mary Gilbert’s 1930s Log Cabin into a cultural gem — a historic public showcase and welcome center at the heart of the Downs River Park in Northville, the task force said.

Tax-deductible donations

Donations are typically 100% tax-deductible, the fundraising page revealed, adding the PayPal Giving Fund will grant your donation to Northville Historical Society Incorporated within 15-45 days.

Research completed on the history of the cabin revealed it was built with 1930s-patented hollow logs that don’t shrink or crack in freezing temperatures, extending the life of the building.

The home is also adorned with a majestic chimney made of massive stones that extend into a width of the north interior wall fireplace, preservations learned.

“This building, even as insignificant as it seems and even though it’s off the beaten path, is a treasure,” preservationist Bill Stockhausen emphasized.
