 First-ever Salem-Canton boys volleyball rivalry game entertaining

Whatever your pre-conceived expectations of the first season of MHSAA boys varsity volleyball, you likely would have been impressed by the amount talent that took the court for Monday’s Salem-Canton match.

Both teams have rostered players who can mash floor-denting kills, place a perfect set for one of those menacing kills, and play court-covering defense.

The Cobras won the match, 25-12, 25-12, to improve their season record to 6-2. Salem slipped to 3-3.

Canton, whose roster is peppered with club players, executed its offense to near-perfection — at least considering they’ve only been playing together for a few weeks.

The primary kills collectors for the Cobras were Mason Kozak, Emerson Abbott and Micah Styles. Connor Dickinson did a masterful job of setting and Abhiram Moolagani played an overall excellent match.

Salem’s efforts revolve around the play of experienced club volleyball player Erik Nordstrom, who never left the court the for the Rocks.

Luke Locke, Josh Smith, Jake Christensen and Conner Townsend also made their presence felt in the front row for the Rocks.
