Construction progressing nicely on P-CEP’s new athletic stadium
To use a football analogy, construction on the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park’s new $11 million-plus athletic stadium appeared to start slowly, but it’s experiencing a heckuva fourth quarter.
Just a little over a month after the project near the intersection of Joy and Canton Center roads stalled like a Detroit Lions’ drive during the pre-Dan Campbell era, the stadium is quickly taking shape, one roll of artificial turf at a time.
On Saturday morning, the entire field had been covered in two-toned field turf — with the new scoreboard in place on the northern end of the site and goalposts positioned at the rear of both end zones.
The potential for games being played on the field this fall appears to be low considering there are just three weeks left in the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s football regular season; and the boys soccer season starts its post-season next week.
Games this fall?
But given the progress that has been made on the project over the past couple of weeks, stranger things have happened.
The site is still without grandstands and the track that will circle the athletic field has yet to be set in place.
The preliminary timeline for the stadium’s completion was September of 2024, according to a presentation at the Nov. 28, 2023, Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Board of Education meeting. However, like most post-COVID construction projects, delays cropped up.
The cost of the project was $11,352,256, which will be funded by the bond that was passed by Plymouth and Canton residents in March of 2020.
