Canton family opening boba tea restaurant in Plymouth Township
A successful restaurant owner for the past several years, Sally Chung knows what satisfies customers’ tastebuds.
Not long after the 20-year resident of Canton and her family sold their spacious Westland Chinese/Japanese eatery last year, they started working on details for their next journey: the launch of Yes Boba Cafe, which is scheduled to open no later than January 2025 at 41632 Ann Arbor Road.
“We still wanted to own a restaurant, we just wanted something a little smaller,” said Chung. “The popularity of boba tea has increased recently in the United States, so we felt a restaurant like this would be great.”
According to EatingWell.com, boba tea is made of tea, milk, water, sugar and tapioca pearls. The iced sweet milky tea is given a good cocktail-style shake, after which tapioca pearls are added.
Chung is a native of Taiwan, the birthplace of Boba tea, which is also known as Bubble Tea.
Tasty shaved ice
In addition to a variety of flavors of boba tea, Yes Boba Cafe will offer a special brand of shaved ice.
“Instead of the shaved ice being flavored with syrup, we’ll use real fruit,” Chung said. “Once people try it, they will love it.”
Chung said Yes Boba Tea could open as soon as December.
“But we don’t want to rush things,” she said. “If we have to wait until January to open, that’s O.K. because we want everything to be perfect.
Chung said the family decided on the Yes Boba Cafe name because it is easy to remember and positive.
Family venture
Sally Chung is the co-owner of Yes Boba Tea with her husband, Leo. The Chungs’ daughter Nicole, who is a student at the University of Michigan, will assist with the launching of the restaurant.
“Nicole is going to handle our social-media accounts,” Sally Chung said.
