Taylor automotive supplier, journeyman die maker honored
State officials joined SEMCA Michigan Works! in honoring the Oakwood Group of Taylor and Senior Die Maker Brandon Rich with 2026 Michigan Works! Impact Awards, celebrating 80 years of Michigan automotive manufacturing and the craftsman who just became a certified journeyman for life.
“Oakwood Group and Brandon Rich show what a real investment in people looks like: 80 years in business, and they’re still building careers from the inside out,” said Ryan Hundt, CEO of the Michigan Works! Association.
“That’s what Michigan manufacturing is all about.”
Employee growth doubled since 2018
Oakwood Group, a family-owned automotive supplier in Taylor, has grown from 300 to more than 750 employees since 2018, creating over 400 jobs.
The company supports its community through charitable giving and career outreach and operates registered apprenticeships in die making and industrial machining.
SEMCA Michigan Works! has been a key partner, supporting apprentices with grant funding and securing nearly $50,000 in Going PRO training support. Oakwood has also hosted workforce events to expand apprenticeship pathways.
“We’ve been in business for 80 years, and like many employers in our industry, we’ve faced the challenge of balancing growth, technology advancement and workforce development,” said Erik Huntley, Director of Human Resources at Oakwood Group.
Customized training
“Our partnership with SEMCA Business Services has been instrumental in helping us meet those challenges. The Going PRO Talent Fund enabled us to deliver customized training for both hourly and salaried employees, helping them grow in technical skills, leadership and continuous improvement.”
Brandon Rich, a longtime employee, recently earned his certified journeyman credential in die making, marking a major milestone in a highly skilled trade.
“Oakwood is my home away from home. My family works here and I love that,” Rich said. “They let me grow my skilled trades skills and career here. I can’t thank them enough for helping me make that happen.”
The Michigan Works! Impact Awards bring lawmakers together with talent development leaders to recognize individuals and organizations from across the state who have overcome adversity or helped others achieve career success through involvement with the Michigan Works! network.
