Reiger-led Cobras overpower Ypsi Lincoln in district opener

Devyn Plozai banks in two of her five points in Canton’s victory over Ypsi Lincoln.

If Canton’s Devyn Reiger’s shooting touch had been just a touch hotter Monday night, they may have been forced to call the Belleville Fire Department to cool her off.

Reiger torched the nets for 24 points in the Cobras’ 44-26 dismantling of Ypsilanti Lincoln in the opening game of the MHSAA District 16 tournament hosted by Belleville High School.

Reiger started hot, scoring five of Canton’s seven points in the first quarter before slumping just for a moment. She helped the Cobras finish of Lincoln with a 10-point fourth quarter when she drained two of her long threes.

Decisive run

The game was tied at 7-all after the first quarter; however, Canton took control during the second eight-minute stanza when it finished off a 15-2 run on a banked-in, top-of-the-key three by freshman Catheryn Orr.

With the win, the Cobras advance to Wednesday’s 5:30 p.m. district semifinal against host Belleville, which is the MHSAA Division 1 defending champion.

Senior Devyn Piozai and junior McKinsey Berlin added five points a piece for the winners.

Freshman excites crowd

The shot of the night may have been launched by Canton freshman Himani Rajoria, a JV call-up, who hit nothing but net on a fourth-quarter triple from the left wing.

Kemari Ransome led the Railsplitters with 12 points.

The Cobras’ winning outcome looked tenuous during the game’s first six minutes when they failed to connect on one free throw. Once Reiger hit on a drive to the hoop, the Cobras scored 13 points in just under three minutes to take charge.
