Proposed new KLAA alignment offers interesting twists

With the three Livonia schools exiting the KLAA following the 2025-26 school year, a new still-in-the-works proposal has emerged to replace the current conference alignment.

The 16-team Kensington Lakes Activities Association will disappear following the 2025-26 school year — a predicament cemented when it was announced earlier this year that the three Livonia schools — Churchill, Stevenson and Franklin — were leaving the conference.

One proposal that has gained momentum lately is merging schools from the current 14-school Southeastern Conference.

The still-in-the-works proposal would create a 28-team mega conference divided into four divisions of seven teams each.

Change is coming

The current KLAA East Division would include current schools Belleville, Westland John Glenn, Wayne Memorial, Dearborn and Dearborn Fordson, and add Monroe and Dearborn Heights Crestwood.

A second division would consist of Ypsilanti, Jackson, Chelsea, Adrian, Pinckney, Tecumseh and Ypsilanti Lincoln, while a third division would be made up of the three Ann Arbor high schools, Saline, Bedford, Dexter and one of the three P-CEP schools.

The fourth division would replicate the current KLAA West Division (Novi, Northville, Hartland, Howell, Brighton and two P-CEP schools) minus one of the three P-CEP schools.

Unique twist

In an interesting twist, the three P-CEP schools would rotate divisions every two years based on their records over the previous two seasons.

The name of the proposed new conference — nor the names of the four divisions — has not been revealed.
