Plymouth business steps up big time for youth football team

Plymouth-Canton Steelers Football Unit Director Mike Brannan stands in front of the organization’s new $12,000 scoreboard.

Football has been played on the field located just a long pass pattern away from the Plymouth Arts & Recreation Complex in downtown Plymouth for at least five decades — probably longer.

Now the home field for the Plymouth-Canton Steelers youth program, the facility’s decades-old scoreboard was aging rapidly during recent years, creating stress for referees, coaches and spectators.

“Due to its age, the scoreboard was in shambles,” said Mike Brannan, the current football unit director for the P-C Steelers. “For example, the clock would suddenly go from 5 minutes to 2 minutes, it wouldn’t start and stop on time. It created a lot of havoc for everyone involved.”

‘He stepped up big time’

During this past off-season, Brannan crossed paths with Bryan Regner, the owner of downtown Plymouth’s Regner Family Legacy Foundation.

“Bryan had just made a donation to the Livonia Franklin football program,” Brannan reflected. “He said to me, ‘Hey, if the Steelers need (financial) help with anything, let me know.

“I told him how our scoreboard was in bad shape and he basically told me, ‘Let me know how much it would cost for a new one and I’ll see what I can do’.”

Grand gesture

What Regner did was cut a check for $12,000 to help the Steelers purchase a brand new scoreboard, which was installed before the teams’ opening games of the 2025 season.

“He stepped up big time for us,” Brannan said of Regner. “It was a great example of how a member of our community contributed to an organization like the Steelers that means so much to the Plymouth and Canton communities.”
