FLAVOR FUSION: Delicious reviews greet Michigan’s first Pizza Twist

A former full-time CPA (certified public account), Varinder Randhawa has transitioned smoothly into a full-time APBA (amazing pizza business owner) — and foodies in Canton Township and beyond are about to benefit from her career change.
Randhawa is the owner of Michigan’s first Pizza Twist — a nine-year-old international brand that prides itself on being the world’s leader in Indian-fusion pizza.
Since opening Saturday (Friday’s original opening was cut short by a power outage) at 49975 Cherry Hill Road in Canton’s Cherry Hill Village, Pizza Twist has earned rave reviews — both online and in-person.
“Representatives in our corporate office said our first four days were one of the company’s best openings,” said Randhawa, a native of Westland and resident of Canton since 2011.
Great feedback
“Hearing that gave me such a good feeling because we have put so much into this. We’ve already received multiple catering requests and we’ve had repeat customers who have told us how much they love our food.”
Indian-fusion pizza combines Indian ingredients like chicken tikka with traditional pizza toppings.
“The customization of our pizzas is literally endless,” Randhawa said. “The ingredients we use are all high-quality, so you’ll feel lighter after you eat our pizza, not bloated.
“When you pick up a pizza out of its box from most places, you’ll see grease on the box. You won’t see any grease on our boxes because of the healthy ingredients we use.”
The restaurant’s interior is bright and uplifting with vibrant art covering its south wall.
Amazing variety
Pizza Twist caters to everyone, regardless of their diet restrictions or tastes.
“We offer vegan, gluten-free and halal options,” she said. “We offer 30 toppings. We’ve had several customers tell us how much they appreciate our variety — and they love the food.”
A graduate of Wayne Memorial High School and the University of Michigan, Randhawa was a successful auditor for the Bank of Montreal (she worked remotely out of her Canton home) prior to her transition to the pizza business.
“My first job ever was at a KFC when I was a teenager and I loved it,” she said. “As a CPA, I was sitting at a desk most of the day. I’d rather be moving around and meeting people, like I’m doing now.
“I had to leave my comfort zone to start this — and it took a little longer to open than we initially anticipated — but hearing the feedback we’re getting in just the past few days has made it all worthwhile.”
Location was worth waiting for
The first-time business owner said she could have opened a Pizza Twist sooner in another location, but she said the wait has been worth the opportunity to open the restaurant in Cherry Hill Village.
“I love this community,” she said. “I used to live in the Uptown Apartments, right across the street. I first tasted Pizza Twist in 2019 and absolutely loved it. When this building was constructed, it inspired my dream to open a place right here, in Cherry Hill Village.
“To be the first Pizza Twist franchise in Michigan is an honor.”
The Pizza Twist will be expanding its seating capacity soon with more interior and outdoor tables, Randhawa said.
Pizza Twist is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays).
