Energetic 100-year-old gets new lease on life at Corewell Health

Paul Ivan, a 100-year-old TAVR recipient at Corewell Health East Troy, celebrates his recent 100th birthday with his family, doctor and nurses at the hospital on Thursday, July 10, 2025.

Five months before celebrating his 100th birthday June 29, Paul Ivan of Algonac became Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital’s 400th TAVR patient this past January.

Now he’s back to leading the active lifestyle he loves.

This means learning to speak a new language online, doing push-ups, sit-ups and cardio exercises every day and drawing rave reviews for the oil paintings he started to create following the loss of his wife eleven years ago.

When Ivan first started breathing more heavily and moving more slowly last fall, Corewell Health interventional cardiologist, Dr. Luay Sayed recommended Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, or TAVR.

Minimally invasive procedure

This minimally invasive procedure was developed about 10 years ago for patients dealing with aortic stenosis and unable to tolerate open heart surgery. Aortic stenosis occurs when the arteries narrow, restricting blood flow to the rest of the body.

Since January, Ivan is feeling back to his old self.

“Getting to my painting class had become exhausting,” he admitted.

‘The ladies … would have really missed me’

“But I had to do it, because the ladies in my group, they would have really missed me,” he joked. “Now, that isn’t a problem anymore. It’s so great to feel good again.”

Dr. Sayed said Ivan’s age is much less a factor than his good physical condition and motivated mindsight.

“Paul was excited to have this procedure done because he wanted to feel better,” Dr. Sayed said.

He’s an inspiration

“He inspires all of us,  reminding us how important it is to take care of ourselves if we want to live healthy, engaged lives.”

Since Dr. Sayed performed the first TAVR procedure at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital in 2020, he and his team have completed more than 400 of the procedures.

Systemwide, the Corewell Health cardiology team has performed more than 7,200 TAVR procedures across the state.
