Could Downriver school adding 2 new sports be trendsetter for state?

Lincoln Park High School is adding girls flag football and boys volleyball to its menu of sports offerings.
Lincoln Park Public Schools is expanding its athletic programs this spring with the addition of two new sports: Boys volleyball and girls flag football.
The new programs are part of the district’s continued commitment to offering opportunities for all Railsplitters to participate in athletics.
“We are excited to create new opportunities for all Railsplitters to get involved in our athletic programs, and boys volleyball and girls flag football, in particular, received a lot of interest from our students,” LPPS Athletic Director Brian Amorose said.
“We are excited to introduce these sports, which will help students develop teamwork, discipline and other real-world skills that will serve them a lifetime.”
MHSAA sanctioning coming soon?
The hope is for boys volleyball to be a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA)-sanctioned sport for Downriver-area schools next school year.
An interim intramural team has formed in Lincoln Park and is scheduled to play Edsel Ford, Dearborn and Hazel Park high schools.
A total 15 students have been chosen for this year’s team — about eight of whom are joining sports teams for the first time, Amorose said.
Detroit Lions-sponsored league
Lincoln Park’s girls flag football team is scheduled to participate in a Detroit Lions-sponsored league in May. The district is hoping to provide girls flag football in the fall along with other area schools.
“Athletics play a critical role in providing our Railsplitters with a well-rounded education that helps prepare them for success and careers,” said Terry Dangerfield, LPPS superintendent.
“We look forward to providing additional new, unique opportunities for even more Railsplitters to experience the thrill and excitement of competitive sports.”
