Canton’s first game as Cobras ends in 1-1 draw with Novi

Canton goal-keeper Nathan Sadowski secures the ball a split second before a Novi attacker.

Defense ruled in Monday’s 2024 debut for longtime Kensington Lakes Activities Association West Division boys soccer mainstays Canton and Novi.

Playing its first game as the Cobras, Canton hung on for a 1-1 draw with the Wildcats in a match that unfolded on a chilly-for-August night on the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park’s west turf field.

After Novi struck first, senior Mohammed Al-Khatib provided the equalizer for the Cobras when he deposited a penalty kick into the back of the net late in the first half.

The play of the night took place mid-way through the first half when Wildcat senior Josh Amalraj cleared a Cobra break-away shot inches before it crossed the goal line. Amalraj ended up sliding into the back of the net during the effort that kept the game scoreless.

Keepers Nathan Sadowski (Canton) and Nate Curtiss (Novi) were stellar between the posts for their respective teams.

Canton returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Salem at the P-CEP’s east turf field.
