Teachers invited to free Educators Night at Detroit Cultural Center

The Detroit Cultural Center Association (DCCA) will host its fourth annual Educators Night from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, giving educators an opportunity to explore the Detroit Cultural Center as a classroom without walls while discovering programs, resources and experiences they can bring back to their students throughout the school year.
The free, district-wide event will bring together five Cultural Center institutions and 80 arts, cultural, STEM and education nonprofit partners from across Southeast Michigan.
Early childhood and pre-K-12 educators, school administrators and homeschooling parents are invited to explore field trips, classroom-ready resources, professional development opportunities, hands-on learning experiences, traveling and in-school programs, summer opportunities, student and teacher wellbeing resources and more.
Professional development opportunities
A featured professional development opportunity this year will be the College for Creative Studies’ Puppetry and Storytelling for K-12 Teachers workshop at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Scheduled from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the 90-minute workshop will offer SCECH credit and give educators an opportunity to explore puppetry and storytelling as tools for teaching and learning.
Advance registration is requested, and participation is limited to 20 educators.
One registration provides access to the entire Educators Night event. Participants select the Cultural Center institution where they would like to begin the evening and can then visit as many of the other participating locations as they would like throughout the event.
‘A classroom without walls’
“Detroit’s Cultural Center is a classroom without walls, and Educators Night gives teachers an opportunity to experience the district as one connected learning community,” said Annmarie Borucki, interim executive director of the Detroit Cultural Center Association.
“In a single evening, an educator can participate in professional development, discover a new field trip, experience hands-on learning, find resources to use in the classroom and meet organizations that can support their students throughout the year. We want educators to leave with practical ideas they can use right away, new relationships they can build upon and a much bigger sense of what is possible for their students.”
Designed as an interconnected learning district, the Detroit Cultural Center brings together art, history, culture, science, literacy, higher education and community knowledge in one of the region’s richest educational ecosystems.
Educators Night is designed to help teachers experience the Cultural Center not simply as a collection of individual institutions, but as an educational community with resources they can draw upon throughout the school year.
This year’s event extends well beyond informational tables. Host institutions are planning professional development workshops, live performances, art-making, demonstrations, planetarium and stage shows, exhibitions and other interactive experiences throughout the evening.
