Canton Township officials and other dignitaries gathered on July 22 in Cherry Hill Village for a special ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand re-opening of Preservation Park, as well as the unveiling of its newest open-air pavilion that will be the permanent home of the Canton Farmers Market during its regular season.

Located at 500 N. Ridge Road, the park has been transformed into a vibrant and welcoming family-friendly destination that also preserves and celebrates the history of the Canton community.

“All of these park improvements are major contributions to the growing momentum surrounding the revitalization of Cherry Hill Village,” said Canton Community Development Director Jon LaFever.

‘Tremendous collaborations’

“It has taken tremendous collaborations to get to where we are with these substantial investments in creating another great location that is designed to bring the residents and visitors together with enhanced community spaces and amenities.”

All of these significant renovations were funded by Wayne County SLFRF (State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds), which is part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), in addition to a Wayne County Parks Millage, and Canton Township.

Preservation Park’s brand-new 70-foot-by-30-foot Mortise and Tenon style pavilion was constructed out of 35,000 pounds of Douglas Fir beams and Oak wooden pins using a traditional Scandinavian style of joining timbers and wooden pins by means of giant oak mallets.

Multiple enhancements

Further improvements made to this seven-acre park include the addition of a new storage building, and hard surface accessible parking areas near two site pavilions.

Added enhancements will also be made to all the historic buildings located throughout Preservation Park in the coming months.

The remainder of the Canton Farmers Markets 2025 season will be held, rain or shine, on Sundays starting July 27, through October 12, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.  No markets will be held on August 31, and September 28.

Located in Canton’s Cherry Hill Village, Preservation Park is home to serval historic properties that were moved to this park, including the Bartlett Travis House, a one and half story Civil War era house; the Clyde Corwin House, an 1845 domicile; and the Canton Historic Society’s barn, which houses local artifacts.
