ZERO TOLERANCE: Defense rules in Northville’s 1-0 win over Salem

Northville’s Zaina Fakhoury and Salem’s Alik Yeremian battle for possession.

Let’s just say the scoreboard operator for Tuesday’s KLAA Conference semifinal featuring host Northville and Salem had a less stressful night than the game’s two goal-keepers.

With the teams’ two keepers — Northville freshman Iliana Tsourapas and Salem senior Addy Messer — protecting their respective nets like a robin guarding a nest with hatchlings, and the well-organized defenses locking down their respective zones with textbook execution, the Mustangs and Rocks played to a scoreless draw throughout the first 80 minutes.

Because the match needed a winner to face Hartland in Thursday’s 7 p.m. final, the game was extended to a penalty-kick shootout (10-minute overtimes are not used by the KLAA in its tournament), which was won, 5-4, by Northville.

Addie ends the game

With the shoot-out knotted at 4-4 (the Mustangs connected on their first four PKs while Salem missed the net once), Northville junior Addie Jones ignited a memorable mid-field celebration when her shot settled in the back of the net to make the official score 1-0.

The Mustangs advanced to the KLAA final Thursday at 7 p.m. against Hartland at Northville High School.

The Eagles and Mustangs battled to a 1-1 draw way back on April 9.

Drama aplenty

Although the scoreboard showed goose eggs for both teams after regulation, there was plenty of drama. Tsourapas played with a poise you’d expect from a senior as she went horizontal for at least three net-seeking shots — and she elevated high above a scrum of players on a last-minute Salem corner kick to secure the ball and ensure the shoot-out.

Soccer players chase the ball near a goal on a green turf field, with a goalkeeper in orange in the background.Messer was equally proficient, earning a clean sheet with a sterling effort. Both squads’ back lines were spectacular, defusing potential scoring chances with a slick combination of communication, skill and positioning.

Salem’s always-dangerous Aubrey Krischano came close to scoring a pair of goals; the first chance, on a one-on-one breakaway, was re-directed beyond the end line by a diving Tsourapas, while the second late in regulation hit off the cross-bar before bouncing out of harm’s way.

Northville’s near-make free kick

Northville came within a sprawling save by Messer of scoring on a well-placed free kick from 25 yards out by Lauren Yaquinto.

There could be a rematch in the fast-approaching MHSAA regional round of the playoffs as both Salem and Northville are seeded No. 1 in their respective districts.
