Take the exhilarating Polar Plunge for Special Olympics!

A trio of friends take the Polar Plunge to help raise money for Special Olympics Michigan athletes.

The minutes are ticking down toward the 2025 Polar Plunge — a one-of-a-kind opportunity for people throughout metro-Detroit to raise money for Special Olympics Michigan athletes.

Set for Thursday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. at Detroit’s Bayview Yacht Club (100 Clairpointe Street), donations raised from the Polar Plunge assists Special Olympics Michigan athletes who are participating in various sports that help build confidence, improve physical fitness and promote social inclusion.

And, hey, you’ll only be cold for a few minutes max.

Plungers can raise funds by posting a link on their social media platforms — or simply by requesting donations from friends and family members.

Along with feeling the exhilaration that comes with subjecting your body to ice-cold water for a brief moment, plungers will be eligible to win some cool swag during the event.

Goal: $80,000

Check-in for plungers starts at 2 p.m. Thursday, with plunging times set for 3 p.m.-4 p.m.; and 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The goal for this year’s Detroit Polar Plunge is $80,000.

There will be an After Splash Bash all afternoon and evening inside the Bayview clubhouse.

There will also be an opportunity to register onsite during Thursday’s event.

‘Too chicken’ option

If you’d like to participate, but would rather not take the plunge, there is a registration option for “Too Chicken” participants.

Plungers are asked to turn in checks (written to SOMI or Special Olympics MI) and cash donations at check-in.

It is recommended that plungers wear a pair of shoes and bring an extra pair to change into post-plunge.

Also, there will be meals and a cash bar available for plungers. Multiple 50/50 raffles will also be organized.
