SMASHING NEWS: P-CEP tennis courts scheduled for major upgrades

The 24 Plymouth-Canton Educational Park tennis courts, located just west of Salem High School, will be replaced for an estimated cost of $3.6 million.
The 24 Plymouth-Canton Educational Park tennis courts — the largest collection of single-site outdoor courts in western Wayne County — are showing their age.
Cracks are becoming more prevalent each spring on the 22-year-old asphalt surfaces, creating havoc for players attempting to return sizzling serves without having to worry about wrinkles that can alter the balls’ direction — or result in injury.
Good news is on the horizon, however, for area tennis fans, as Plymouth-Canton Schools recently revealed a $3.1 million plan to demolish the current courts, fencing and sidewalks and upgrade the facilities with post-tension concrete, new fencing and an underground stormwater detention system.
Ground-breaking for the project is tentatively set for this spring with an October 2024 completion date targeted. The timeline will be pushed back if Wayne County permits cannot be secured by next month.
Safety concerns
Construction will not start until the 2024 spring girls tennis season is complete, SocialHouseNews.com has learned. Alternate arrangements for the late-summer/early-fall 2024 boys season are ongoing.

“APAAs (directors of athletics) at P-CEP expressed safety concerns over the current conditions of the courts,” Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Chief Finance & Operations Officer Jill Minnick announced in a memo to Superintendent Monica Merritt.
“The courts were assessed and it was determined the tennis courts required a complete replacement. The project scope is to replace the asphalt courts with post-tensioned concrete, which is a much more durable material. The new courts will include coaching alleys, a full replacement of all fencing, and updated stormwater detention.”
The project will be funded by the 2020 Plymouth-Canton Community Schools bond.
