SE Michigan restaurant cooks up March Madness sandwich brackets

You don’t have to be a NCAA basketball fan to get in on some fun this March. Zingerman’s Deli, named Michigan’s “Must-Try Sandwich Joint” by MSN, has cooked up their own tournament and hopes their fans will play along and help them crown a champion sandwich.

Voting is live on their website zingermansdeli.com.

There are 32 menu items seeded into 16 quarterfinal matches. Fan voting will narrow down the field all March in subsequent rounds and a champion sandwich will be announced on April 7 at 11:30 p.m. (the same day the NCAA will have a champion team).

The public can watch the vote tally and see the results in real time on the Deli’s website and the Zingerman’s team says they’ll keep fans updated and excited about the tournament via their email newsletter and on their social media platforms.

You can win prizes

And if voting to keep your favorite sandwich in the running isn’t incentive enough to play, Zingerman’s is giving away prizes throughout the tournament, including a grand prize opportunity to create and name your own Zingerman’s sandwich to be on their menu for one month ($1,000 value).

Other prizes include free sandwiches and gift cards of varying amounts.

“We’re bringing a little bit of March Madness magic to the Deli this year — with sandwiches as the stars of the show,” said Jennifer Santi, marketing and communications manager for Zingerman’s Deli.

“Whether you’re a hoops fan or just a lover of great food, this is your chance to rally behind your favorite bite and hopefully win the opportunity to create your own. We can’t wait to see which sandwich comes out on top.”

Zingerman’s Delicatessen is an Ann Arbor institution known for full-flavored, traditionally-made foods — from storied sandwiches and Jewish classics to seasonal side dishes and specialty food staples.

Decades of deliciousness

Throughout the decades, the deli has grown from a single 1,000-square-foot historic storefront to a campus including the Next Door Café and Zingerman’s Catering and Events.

The Deli was founded in 1982 by Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig.

Over the years, Zingerman’s has remained rooted in the community while expanding to become a family of independently-owned food and service-focused businesses, known as the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses.
