Anyone who watched Madi Morson play basketball for Salem High School before graduating in 2024 won’t be surprised at the news that broke out of Mount Pleasant earlier this week.

Morson was named the Mid-American Conference’s Freshman of the Year after she averaged 16.6 points per game for the Chippewas. Her 499 points were just eight off the program’s freshman record set by Sue Nissen during the 1987-88 season.

And that’s not all!

Strong finish

Morson, who is from Canton, also earned second team All-MAC honors as she posted eight of her 10 20-point games in the final 11 games of the regular season.

Morson, who led the Rocks to the MHSAA Division 1 Final Four as a junior, is the third player in CMU history to achieve both MAC Freshman of the Year and land on an all-conference first or second team in the same season.

Presley Hudson (’19) collected a second-team nod with her rookie honor in 2016.

Nissen remains the only to be named to the league’s first team on top of the top freshman laurel.
