Recommended new Canton Cobra logo unveiled. What do you think?

The long-awaited unveiling of Canton High School’s potential new “Cobra” logo unfolded Tuesday night at the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools regular board of education meeting.

Following an exhaustive process that generated 39 submissions, a logo developed by former Canton High School student/athlete Zane Birchler is being recommended to the board for approval.

On November 28, 2023 the Board of Education approved a resolution to adopt “Cobras” as the new mascot for Canton High School, replacing the 50-year-old Chief mascot.

Birchler, a former star pitcher for the Chiefs’ baseball team, is a design professional with experience at Taylor Made. According to the board meeting information packet,

Birchler’s career specializes in character design, branding and merchandising creation.

Stringent guidelines

The guidelines each submission followed included: staying true to the district’s vision and mission; incorporating colors, values and identity of Canton, particularly to student voice and input; and following student inspiration concepts with fidelity in building the logo.

All submissions will receive district recognition, and the artist(s) will receive a framed print of the finalized mascot logo, as well as an article of Canton High School spirit wear with the new logo.

Approval of the recommended logo was not voted on Tuesday night as it was the first reading on the subject.

Tuesday’s meeting was eventful in more ways than one as board president Shawn Wilson announced he is retiring from the board.
