President Joe Biden came to the city of Northville on Friday, July 12, to meet with local government officials and civic leaders during a reelection campaign visit to Detroit.

The meeting was scheduled after the Biden administration reached out to elected representatives, seeking a locale in southeastern Michigan that provided easy in-and-out access, among other factors.

Mayor Brian Turnbull worked with the office of U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell along with the Biden administration on the logistics of the visit. It was not a publicized event, so it took people by surprise.

In the late afternoon of a 90-degree Friday, the president’s motorcade traveled down S. Center to W. Main, past spectators lined up on Main Street, to stop at the historic Garage Grill & Fuel Bar. There, he was greeted by approximately 50 invited guests, including Mayor Turnbull and other City Council members, City Manager George Lahanas, along with many state and county elected officials, civic leaders, and members of the Democratic party.

Visit lasted approximately 30 minutes

U.S. Rep. Dingell introduced the president. During a speech of approximately 30 minutes, he touched on many subjects, including his recent engagement at the four-day NATO meeting with 32 foreign heads of state.

He noted, “There’s a lot changing, not because of Joe Biden being president but just a time of the significant movement we’re in. And what happens in the next several years is going to determine what the next several decades look like.”

When he finished his remarks, he went around to the tables and talked to attendees.
