Plymouth’s Elmy starts on ESPN in Murray St.’s biggest game ever

Murray State University’s baseball team — the Ultimate Underdog in college baseball’s post-season this spring — is making believers out of fans coast to coast.
On Monday, the Racers continued to shock the world by upsetting host Duke, 5-4, to advance to the eight-team College Baseball World Series.
One of the catalysts for Monday’s victory was 2021 Plymouth grad Kane Elmy, who was solid as the Racers’ starting pitcher as he faced a potent Blue Devil batting order.
‘Giving us a chance to win’
After giving up an early first-inning run, Elmy shined (three of the eight outs he registered were strikeouts) until he surrendered a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the third inning, at which point manager Dan Skirka lifted him for a relief pitcher.

“No pitcher in Racers baseball history has started a game this big,” Skirka said of Elmy during a third-inning in-dugout interview on ESPN. “He got his nerves settled (after he gave up the first run). He had a couple of 50/50 balls that didn’t go his way (in the first), but he’s competing and giving us a chance to win.”
Murray State is the talk of the college baseball world after becoming a rare No. 4 seed in a four-team NCAA Super Regional to advance to the CBWS.
Bring on the Bruins
The Racers will open the CBWS against UCLA at 1 p.m. on Saturday. All games will be televised by ESPN.
Elmy led the Racers with six wins and a 3.76 earned run average this season after transferring in from Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek.
