April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance month — and Northville’s Mod Market (an enterprise of the city’s Living & Learning Enrichment Center) is feeling an abundance of love from the community.

From March 14 through earlier this week, 28 of Mod Market’s empowered artists’ works were displayed at the Janice Charach Gallery in West Bloomfield.

“For many of these artists, it has been their very first opportunity to showcase their work in a public setting,” noted Mod Market Manager Amy Bonser. “We sold more than 30 works of art, too.”

Through April 30, Mod Market’s empowered artists will have a collaborative gallery exhibit at Saint John’s Resort in its Gallery Hall.  This exhibit features six of of the center’s artists who have autism.

“It is a wonderful way to show the exquisite talent and diversity of abilities,” Bonser added.

The Northville Gallery is also featuring two of the artists with works in hues of blue, a color often linked to autism.

Gallery Hall is located just past the hotel front desk at Saint John’s Resort, which is located at 44045 Five Mile Road in Plymouth.

Mod has enjoyed a partnership with Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea, Novi Town Center, for four years.

“We curate the artwork for their café walls and artist Nick Bair creates amazing chalk drawings with intricate detail and whimsy on their floor to ceiling chalk wall,” Bonser said.

“We hung autism awareness and education signage at the café (earlier this week) and next week we will be changing the walls to include the works of 12 of our artists with autism.”

Sweetwaters collaboration

Sweetwaters will be hosting an opening reception on Wednesday, April 10, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. featuring the work of these 12 artists.

The artists will introduce themselves and their artwork throughout the evening and the public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Sweetwaters is located at 43346 Grand River Ave Novi.
