Northville power play goes nuclear in 6-0 win over Canton
Northville goalie Andrea Castiglioni snuffs out a decent scoring chance by Canton forward Jacob Lee
The Northville hockey team’s power play was running as smoothly as a McLaren engine Wednesday night against host Canton.
The Mustangs, who enjoyed a man advantage more often than not during the first two periods, blanked the Cobras, 6-0, to improve to 6-3. The Cobras slipped to 7-5.
Fueled by Ethan Egelski’s hat-trick and a pair of net-finders from Tommy Marinoff, the Mustangs scored three goals in the first period and three more in the second to all but seal the win with 17 minutes to play.
Castiglioni stonewalls Cobras
Northville goalie Andrea Castiglioni was marvelous between the pipes for the Mustangs, turning away 21 shots.
The final score was deceptive as far as Canton. goalie Jacek Waszkiewicz’s night was concerned. Although he yielded six goals (five while the Cobras were short-handed), he made 38 stops, many from point-blank range.
Graham Ryba also scored for the winners — his first lamp-lighter of the season.
‘Stangs excel in penalty-killing, too
Northville’s penalty-killing unit was as efficient as its power play as the Mustangs survived three third-period penalties to maintain the shutout.
Lucas Goerke assisted on two Northville goals, while Alex Cassey, Egelski (2), Ryba and Marinoff also registered helpers.
Possibly the play of the night unfolded in the first period when Castiglioni denied Canton’s Paolo Decina’s penalty shot with the game still scoreless.
Both teams were whistled for six penalties.
