When the dust had settled at the 2025 MEGASTAR meet held June 5 at Shepherd High School, two Northville middle schools earned gold-medal finishes.

The Meads Mill girls team edged out Saline, 44.0-43.5, to capture the competitions Large School Division, which consists of 42 of the most-populous middle schools throughout Michigan.

Alexandra Scappaticci earned individual first-place points in the 1,600-meter run (5:08.14) and 3,200-meter run (11:04.70). She also anchored the team’s first-place 3,200-meter relay foursome that included Emma Kulpa, Taylor Chrzanowski and Rosie Kulpa.

Scappaticci defends two titles

“Alexandra ran smart races in both the 1,600 and 3,200 to successfully defend her titles from last year,” said Meads Mill Head Coach Evan Paputa.

“Emma’s fifth-place finish in the 1.600, along with the 4 x 400’s clutch second-place finish in the final event of the night, proved crucial in such a tightly contested meet.”

The Patriots also received a strong effort from the 1,600-meter relay quartet of Emma Kulpa, Lily Albertson, Chrzanowski and Rosie Kulpa, whose second-pace time of 4:16.88 was a new school record.

‘Exciting accomplishment

“Winning MEGASTAR is an exciting accomplishment for Meads Mill and I am incredibly proud of the effort every single athlete put forth during the meet,” said Paputa. “While we had some truly outstanding performances, what stood out most was the spirit of Mudita — having vicarious joy through someone else’s success — that our team displayed.

“From lining the track during races, to celebrating their teammates’ achievements, our athletes showed what makes our team special. This win is not just a reflection of talent, but of our character and culture.

“The 4 x 800 relay team set the tone with an extraordinary, record-breaking performance, winning the race by 22 seconds. They’ve been on a mission all season. They steadily broke the seven-year school record over the course of the season by 34 seconds.

“Our 4×400 team of Emma Kulpa, Lily Albertson, Taylor Chrzanowski, and Rosie Kulpa lived in the moment with great concentration, knowing that the meet’s outcome would hinge on their race.

“All four of them dug deep to run a great race and break a 12-year school record. It was an incredible moment to watch our team come together and celebrate once the results were announced.”

Hillside boys shine

The Hillside boys contingent won the Large School division, earning 55 points, one more than runner-up Saginaw’s White Pine.

Hillside’s Braden Holzen won the 100-meter dash in 11.46 seconds before picking up second-place points for his team in the 200 dash. He also won the high jump with a leap of 6-feet.

Hillside had two top-four finishers in the 3,200: Braden Millar (second in 10:09.98) and Ethan Oros (fourth in 10:16).
