New ownership coming to downtown Plymouth’s Mayflower Centre
SocialHouseNews.com has learned the sale of the Mayflower Centre — a cornerstone property located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Main Street and Ann Arbor Trail in downtown Plymouth — is nearing the final stages.
The ongoing negotiations regarding the sale of the mixed-use retail, office and residential building were confirmed during a recent Plymouth Chamber of Commerce meeting.
The prospective new owners respectfully declined an interview with SHN until the sale is complete.
The Mayflower Centre is owned by Birmingham, Michigan-based RSM Development & Management.
It will be interesting to see how the change of ownership impacts arguably the most prominent business space in the complex — the ground-floor property formerly occupied by Panera Bread, which has been vacant since 2020.
Reports surfaced in early-2023 that the former Panera space would be converted into a bakery-type business. Construction equipment can be seen inside the building; however, progress on the renovation seems to have stalled.
Rich history
The Mayflower Centre replaced the Mayflower Hotel at 801 W. Ann Arbor Trail after the 73-year-old inn was razed in 2000.
The four-story complex is occupied by retail and office space throughout its first two floors and 11 luxury condominiums — the value of which are in the neighborhood of $1 million — on the top two floors.
Each condominium is two stories tall with a balcony on one side and a terrace on the other.
According to PlymouthMiDiscoveries.com, the corner was the location where Plymouth’s first home was built by Plymouth pioneers William and Kezia Starkweather in 1825.
Big changes coming
The landscape of downtown Plymouth is changing dramatically. The upscale restaurant The Ledger is slated to open in the coming weeks on the southwest corner of Penniman and Main.
Also, a craft cocktails and tasting room business is slated to open sometime in 2024 in the former Wiltse’s Pharmacy site on Main Street.
SHN will provide updates on the status of the sale of the Mayflower Centre as details become available.
