New family-fueled Plymouth cafe offers energizing menu items
If Plymouth’s newest business could be summed up in three words, it would undoubtedly be the trio that adorn the top of its official business card: NUTRITION. ENERGY. COMMUNITY.
Given that PS Nutrition Cafe is enthusiastically owned and operated by members of the Calhouns, FAMILY could also be added to the above-listed grouping.
Opened since the first week of March, PS Nutrition not only offers high-quality protein shakes, smoothies, energy teas and healthy snacks, its stylish interior is furnished with four leather free-to-use massage chairs that have RELAXATION written all over them.
“About six years ago, I learned about Encore Smoothies in Canton and it sounded like a business I’d like to get involved in down the road,” said PS owner Ron Calhoun, describing his new business’s backstory.
“I approached the owners of Encore four years ago and told them we were ready to open a location, but COVID hit, which delayed our plans. This year, I’m selling my lawn-care business (Canton-based Conveniently Yours Lawn Care), which freed up some time for me to operate a new venture.”
Amazing news
A few months ago, Encore owner Rachel Hillier delivered some amazing news to Calhoun.
“She said, ‘You’re not going to believe this, but a place just came up for you in Plymouth,” Calhoun reflected. “I’ve lived in the Plymouth-Canton community my entire life — I attended Smith Elementary and Pioneer Middle School — so opening a business on Main Street in Plymouth was perfect. So I said, ‘Let’s do it!'”
Operating inside former site of Plymouth Nutrition, Calhoun said business has been brisk throughout the first six weeks.
“We’re already doing three times the amount of business the previous owner was doing,” he revealed. “A big reason for that, I believe, is that we’re here all the time and we have made great connections within the community.
“We have a great relationship with Planet Fitness across the street, the karate place in our complex loves us and we already have a huge group of high school students who are regulars.”
All in the family
Speaking of high school students, Calhoun’s two sons — Dillon and Devvin, both student-athletes at Canton High School — work at PS when they’re not busy with school and sports.
“They both worked at Encore for a couple of months to learn everything they needed to know to work here,” Calhoun said. “It’s really worked out great all the way around.”
Dillon and Devvin played a role in the naming of their dad’s new business, too.
“Dillon’s nickname since he was young was Pickle and Devvin’s is Shookie — I’m not exactly sure why, they were just silly nicknames that stuck,” Calhoun said. “We took the first initial from those two nicknames, added Nutrition, and we had a name.”
Every item on PS’s menu is delicious and healthy, Calhoun said.
“This is the kind of bar parents want their kids to go to,” he added, smiling. “Everything we serve is healthy. There are no dairy products; it’s all plant-based, but delicious at the same time.”
Fabulous feedback
When asked what menu items have been most popular since opening day, Calhoun said the mega teas have received phenomenal feedback, “and we have the best protein shakes around. We use Herbalife products, which are considered the best in the industry.”
Among PS’s best-selling protein shakes so far are its peanut-butter banana and strawberry shortcake flavors.
PS Nutrition is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
