Michelle Johnson

Legal Aid and Defender Association (LADA) is proud to announce Michelle L. Johnson, president and CEO, has been named a 2025 Influential Women of Law Honoree by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

This prestigious recognition honors women attorneys and judges who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, service, and professional accomplishment while advancing justice and equity in their communities.

Honorees were recognized at a luncheon on Sept. 26.

As president and CEO of LADA, Johnson oversees the nonprofit organization that works to secure the rights of underserved individuals and families across Metro Detroit.

What is LADA?

LADA addresses critical legal issues ranging from housing support and veteran advocacy to criminal record expungement and landlord/tenant disputes each year.

LADA is the oldest provider of free civil legal assistance for low-income and vulnerable residents of Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties.

Johnson began her career at LADA in 2002, inspired by her passion for ensuring fair access to justice.

Over more than two decades, she has held multiple leadership and legal roles within the organization, demonstrating her deep commitment to client-centered advocacy.

Multi-talented fund administrator

A highly skilled grant writer and fund administrator, Johnson has secured significant funding from government entities, community foundations, and nonprofit organizations to expand services for those in need.

“Michelle’s dedication to empowerment and equity defines the heart of our mission,” said Roger Short, board chair. “Her leadership and vision have strengthened LADA and, more importantly, improved the lives of thousands of individuals and families across Southeast Michigan.”

Johnson’s interest in law began in high school where she first discovered her passion for advocacy. She continued her education at Eastern Michigan University before earning her law degree from Wayne State University Law School.

She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and actively engaged with the Detroit, Oakland County, and Macomb County Bar Associations.

Known on a national level

In addition to her leadership at LADA, Johnson is a respected voice at national and regional conferences, including presentations at the National Legal Aid and Defender Association Annual Conference.

“I am honored to be recognized among such an inspiring group of women,” said Johnson. “This award reflects not only my journey, but the collective efforts of the dedicated team at LADA and the resilience of the communities we serve every day.”

The Influential Women of Law awards recognize outstanding legal professionals who consistently break barriers and uplift others in the profession.

Johnson’s recognition further underscores her lifelong commitment to expanding access to justice for Michigan’s most vulnerable residents.
