Livonia Churchill’s Taleb embraces vital QB1 responsibilities

Livonia Churchill senior Ali Taleb said quarterback has been his favorite position since Day One.
Playing quarterback for a historically-successful Division 1 high school is not for everybody.
In addition to being tasked with leading your teenaged peers into battle, you need to back up your words with highly-productive actions.
Meet Livonia Churchill senior Ali Taleb, who accepts his role as QB1 with finely-honed skills and confidence.

“I’ve always wanted to play quarterback, since I was a little kid,” said Taleb, a second-year starter. “I like that quarterbacks have to make a lot of decisions and it’s important that you’re a high-character person. You can’t be a bad leader and be a quarterback.
“I work hard to make sure I have a command of the offense, too, because that builds confidence in myself and my teammates. I just try to be myself out there.”
Commanding presence
Taleb flashed that command in the Chargers’ opening game last season when he punished New Boston Huron’s defense to the tune of 250 all-purpose yards in the Chargers’ 35-28 victory.
Like most high school QBs, Taleb focuses 100% of his energies on the offensive side of the line of scrimmage.
“But I would play defense if asked,” he said. “Anything my team needs to win.”
Classroom standout
A stellar student, Taleb has received next-level look from Kalamazoo College and Adrian.
“My favorite subject is math,” he revealed. “It’s always come kind of easy to me. Geometry was challenging, but I’m always up for a challenge.”
Admittedly undecided about his post-college career plans, Taleb is sure of one thing regarding his future.
“I definitely would like to work in some capacity in the sport of football,” he said. “I’d love to coach someday. Heck, I think being a ref would be cool, too, because it would keep me in the game.”
Earning respect
Taleb has earned rave reviews — both on and off the field — from Churchill Head Coach Allen Feigel.

“Ali has done everything we asked him to do,” said Feigel. “He’s gotten himself into better shape and continues to refine his skills.
“He’s a hard worker and is a high academic kid who comes from a great family. I’m excited to see his hard work pay off.”
Story behind ’10’
There’s a compelling story as to why Taleb wears No. 10.
“Starting out in football, I wasn’t sure what number I wanted to wear, but I wanted my number to be meaningful,” he said. “My dad (Marwan) wore No. 10 at (Dearborn) Fordson, so that’s the number I picked.”
And he wears it well — whether he’s running, throwing or simply leading.
