Here’s a feel-good story of how EMU athletes made middle-schoolers’ day
Five members of the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team are pictured with Discovery Middle School volleyball players after the Eagles players watch Discovery take on Liberty Middle School.
Most of us can only imagine how busy the weekly schedules are for Division 1 collegiate athletes, who juggle playing their sport of choice along with studying, working out and maintaining a healthy social life.
With that in mind, members of the Eastern Michigan University women’s volleyball team did something earlier this week that is spine-tingling cool.
On a recent Friday night, members of Canton’s Discovery and Liberty Middle School volleyball teams attended an EMU volleyball match in Ypsilanti.
Following the match, the collegiate players held an autograph session for the local middle school players.
A heart-warming act of kindness
“Mostly as a fun joke, our players invited the Eastern Michigan players to come attend one of our matches the following week,” explained Discovery Middle School Volleyball Coach Luke Haddad.

Much to the middle school players’ delightful surprise, five members of the EMU volleyball team actually showed up to watch this week’s Discovery-vs.-Liberty match.
“The EMU players took photos with the Discovery and Liberty players, joined in our team cheer, gave advice to the girls, and were just incredibly kind and encouraging the entire night,” Haddad said.
“The gym was packed, the energy was amazing and it was one of those moments that remind you sports can connect people in powerful ways.”
