Defying wind gusting up to 40 miles per hour and wind chills in the 20s, the Salem and Plymouth high school track and field athletes put on a show Tuesday afternoon.
Plymouth’s boys team defeated the Rocks, 78-59, while Salem’s girls squad outlasted the Wildcats, 82-55.
The Wildcats’ boys team is now tied atop the KLAA West Division standings with Northville. Both Salem and Plymouth girls squads are now 1-1.
Among the stars for Plymouth’s boys team were Jack Chadwick, who earned first-place points in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and anchored the first-place 4 x 800 relay team; Sean Cinzori, who won the pole vault and 300-meter hurdles race; and freshman Xavier Williams, who broke the tape first in the 100-meter dash.
Shining for Salem’s boys team were Nye Turner, who won the high jump and long jump; and Owen Manarelli, who won the 200 dash and ran the first leg of the Rocks’ first-place 4 x 200 relay team.
Leading the way for Salem’s girls team were Natalia Bohn, who won the 300- and 100-meter hurdles events; and freshman Alena Lewis, who won the 100-meter dash and anchored the Rocks’ first-place 4 x 100 relay unit.
Plymouth’s girls squad was led by first-place throwers Izzy Krause (shot put) and Siena Aliaj (discus); and Mackenzie Dicken, who won the 800 run and ran the first leg of the Wildcats’ winning 4 x 400 quartet.
