The public is invited to attend the dedication of the tree carving located in the green space behind City Hall and the Northville District Library, at 1 p.m., Sat., Sept. 21 during the Northville Victorian Fall Festival.

Discover the legacy of the Northville community told in depictions of scenes and signature items carved into the tree trunk. Learn how the stately Elm, stricken by disease, had been saved from being totally cut down and removed. The tall trunk has been turned into a work of art that honors history. It maintains a stately position on the green space that so many people enjoy.

This commemorative art project celebrates the history, art, culture and tree canopy of Northville. It is a collaboration by Northville Tree ChampionsNorthville Art House, Northville District Library, Northville Historical Society, Northville community leaders, and Northville Garden Club.

Local landmarks featured in carvings

The artwork was created by local artist Stacy K. Pearson and carved by Tom Fink, an expert carver and resident of West Bloomfield.

Intricate relief carvings of the water wheel, a horse and surrey, the Yerkes Victorian house, and a Stinson airplane are among the scenes that are set around the tree trunk.

It’s topped by a Mustang (the horse not the car), which is the mascot of Northville High School and also reflects the horse racing at Northville Downs.

The cost was covered by donations from the Northville Community Support Fund.
