Canton Buddy’s ‘Coming Soon’ replaced by ‘Now Open’

Canton Buddy’s ‘Coming Soon’ replaced by ‘Now Open’

Close to nine months after posting “Coming Soon” signs at its Ford Road location, Buddy’s Pizza opened this week in Canton.

With the possible exception of “extra cheese”, the two most-welcomed words for Canton Township fans of Buddy’s Pizza were posted on the window of its new location at 42911 Ford Road Tuesday afternoon: “Now Open”.

Close to nine months after a “Coming Soon” poster was affixed to the window of the former Genova Brick Oven Pizza site, Buddy’s opened its 23rd Michigan location this week.

The parking lot outside the new takeout/deliver-only restaurant was bustling with activity Tuesday — not only because of the launching of the popular pizza joint, but because its neighbor, Luca Pastry, is one of the most popular destinations for paczkis on “Fat Tuesday”.

Rare for the brand — but a growing trend in the fast-casual restaurant industry — the Canton Buddy’s offers no dine-in option, unlike its closest locations in Plymouth Township, Livonia and Farmington Hills.

Small but stylish interior

The interior is modest-sized, but stylishly decorated in nostalgia-themed Buddy’s wallpaper.

The menu features four Buddy’s original salads and a list of its signature square pizzas.

A metro-Detroit mainstay, Buddy’s Pizza opened in 1946 at the corner of Six Mile and Conant in Detroit, in what was previously a speakeasy called Buddy’s Rendezvous.

First square-shaped pie

Using a bit of ingenuity and square blue steel pans intended to hold nuts and bolts at local automotive plants, Gus Guerra created the first Detroit-Style Pizza – a square-shaped pie that was the first of its kind in a world of round pizza.
