Area’s only Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken is about to get company

The Lees on Ann Arbor Road has been the only one in metro Detroit for decades. That status is about to change.

A long line of people snaked out of Plymouth’s Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken lobby Wednesday afternoon, comforted by above-normal March temperatures and the aroma of the takeout-only restaurant’s main attraction: fried chicken.

The Plymouth’s Lee’s (1122 W. Ann Arbor Road) status as the only location in metro Detroit is about to change as 12 new Lee’s franchises are prepping to open in the next couple of years.

Livonia chicken lovers will be excited to learn a Lee’s located near the intersection of Plymouth and Farmington roads is on the verge of opening sometime this summer, a company spokesperson confirmed.

“Lee’s is growing and we’re excited to expand our presence in the state of Michigan for Lee’s fans to experience our fresh, never frozen, products,” said Lee’s CEO Ryan Weaver in a press release. “The Lee’s location in Plymouth has a legendary following, so we’re looking forward to adding many new locations in southeast Michigan over the coming years.”

Go-to eatery for reunions, parties

For decades, Plymouth’s Lee’s has served as a go-to for family gatherings, high school graduation parties and any-night-of-the-week dinner.

Launched in 1966, the franchise has earned a stellar reputation for its quality of food, friendly staff and efficient service.

Despite the Plymouth’s location’s tight quarters and long lines (especially around meal time), customers are generally served within 10 minutes of exiting their vehicles.

The restaurant’s loyal customers embrace the brand’s familiar menu, which has remained constant since opening in the 1970s.

“The way we look at it is, ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it’,” said current owner Brian Langkabel. “There have been times we’ve thought about moving or expanding (the Ann Arbor Road site), but then we realize this is the best location we could ever hope for.”
