 MDOT commits $3 million for 11 Mile Road project in Royal Oak

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced the commitment of $3 million in federal funds for a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) project in Royal Oak.

At this stage, MDOT is issuing a conditional commitment reserving federal transportation funds designated by Congress for state-approved projects contingent upon completion of federal funding requirements.

These grants create immeasurable socioeconomic value by improving health, stimulating economic development and empowering disadvantaged communities.

Extensive project

The approved project received a $3,001,733 grant commitment for separated pathway construction, and side path and lane conversion on 11 Mile Road.

“We are incredibly grateful to MDOT for investing in Royal Oak through the TAP,” said Michael Fournier, City of Royal Oak mayor. “This project is about more than improving a roadway; it’s about creating opportunities, strengthening connections and building a community where everyone can move safely and confidently.

“By transforming the 11 Mile Road corridor into a safer, more beautiful and more welcoming place for people walking, biking, driving and using public transit, we’re connecting neighborhoods, supporting local businesses, improving access to jobs, parks and transit, and investing in a future where every resident has more choices in how they get around. Together, we’re creating a corridor that reflects our shared commitment to a more connected, vibrant and equitable region.”

In addition to construction of a new shared-use pathway, this project converts a four-lane vehicle layout to three vehicular lanes, freeing vital space for expanding green lawns, pedestrian refuge islands and a protective barrier for pedestrians.

The project includes crosswalks, improved lighting and upgraded bus stops. Fashioning flexible streetscapes empowers multimodal transportation, ranging from public transit buses to micromobility in a major regional spine.
